- CorTen Steel Explained
CorTen steel is a weather resistant steel developed by US Steel. This durable alloy combines iron with copper, silicon, nickel and chromium, creating a material designed to stand the test of time and the elements.
One of CorTen’s most distinctive features is its brown-orange rust appearance, which isn’t just for looks, it’s functional. Unlike regular steel, CorTen forms a protective oxide layer (rust) that shields the metal beneath from further corrosion. This natural process takes about 2 to 6 months, depending on weather conditions.
Want to speed up the rusting? A simple salt or vinegar solution sprayed onto the surface can help start the process and ensure even colouration or just purchase your RB73 pre-rusted.
Note: If you purchase an RB73 in its original, un-rusted state, don’t worry, it will rust! The natural weathering just hasn’t begun before delivery. Once exposed to the elements, your product will develop its unique, protective rust finish right at home.
